FocalPoint completes its real-time S-GNSS® receiver as part of the European Space Agency’s NAVISP programme

We are delighted today to announce the completion of the world’s first S-GNSS® receiver, as part of the European Space Agency’s NAVISP programme.

Under the support of NAVISP, we have achieved a set of committed milestones in completing the delivery of the project. Today, Javier Garcia, Principal GNSS Engineer and Project Lead, shared the outputs from this 2-year programme with the NAVISP audience.

This newly developed receiver, featuring our award-winning Supercorrelation™ technology, will support our commercialisation strategy; underpinning the development of IP and product delivery. It will help to unlock commercial opportunities with customers and support integration with partner chipset suppliers.

Exploiting its unique ability to determine the arrival angle of satellite signals, Supercorrelation™ permits only the line-of-sight signals to calculate a position, ignoring signals arriving from other directions such as reflections which would corrupt the solution. Having won multiple awards, Supercorrelation™ has received recognition from the prestigious Institute of Navigation and Institute of Physics, having won the Business Innovation Award in 2023.

Completing the S-GNSS® receiver will allow us to prove their technology’s commercial and technical feasibility in 3 core sectors – aligning with the current limitations of GNSS accuracy across the automotive, wearables and mobile sector industries.

The S-GNSS® receiver will effectively work as a demonstration model our Supercorrelation technology, providing a test and evaluation platform to showcase the impact of S-GNSS® Auto to the automotive industry.

Having already commenced driving trials in deep urban and foliage environments using the S-GNSS® receiver, we have been demonstrating the accuracy improvements in both the measurement (pseudorange and doppler) and position domains (position and velocity). Initial results show case a clear improvement in GNSS positioning accuracy in challenging environments, demonstrating the validity of an S-GNSS® upgrade to improve chip performance. Further receiver development aims to expand the supported signal types beyond GPS and Galileo, and to optimise the implementation of Supercorrelation™ measurement accuracy within the positioning solution.

Gonzalo Martin de Mercado, NAVISP Element 2 Manager under which this project was developed, said,

“We are very proud to have supported FocalPoint in developing their S-GNSS® receiver. This technology is a step-forward for GNSS receivers since it solves in a fast and cost-effective way the multipath problem existing in urban environments. We are confident the results of the project will allow FocalPoint to provide evidence of the impact of this innovation to present and future partners. We are confident this technology will have significant growth potential in ADAS, and even in consumer markets like smartphones and wearables.
