The role of GNSS in sustainable transportation

GNSS applications

In an era marked by climate change and resource depletion, sustainability has become a pressing priority. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are crucial in advancing sustainable practices across various sectors, especially in transportation. By providing accurate location data, GNSS technologies enable better decision-making and efficient resource management, contributing to a more sustainable future. GNSS technology plays a key role in road transportation. In 2017, a UK report estimated that 67% of economic impact of a loss of GNSS-powered PNT would be felt mainly in three sectors: road transport, emergency and justice services, and maritime (including port logistics).

How does GNSS contribute to sustainability in transportation?

Efficient transportation and safer navigation

GNSS accuracy plays a vital role in the navigation of vehicles, enhancing the efficiency of transportation services such as ridesharing (e.g., Uber) and delivery services (e.g., Amazon, food deliveries). With the widespread use of GNSS-enabled devices, including smartphones and wearables, drivers can navigate the fastest and safest routes to their destinations, significantly reducing travel time and fuel consumption. For example, Reykjavik has implemented a GNSS-based prioritisation system of green lights for public transport and emergency vehicles, helping improve the safety of roads and reduce pollution.

Reduced travel time and fuel consumption

By providing real-time traffic updates and optimal routing, GNSS helps drivers avoid congestion and roadblocks. This reduction in travel time translates into lower fuel consumption, which decreases greenhouse gas emissions. A more efficient delivery route means that less time is spent on the road, resulting in fewer emissions per delivery.

Enhanced safety

Safer navigation reduces the likelihood of accidents, which not only protects drivers and passengers but also minimises the environmental impact of vehicle collisions. Accidents often lead to traffic delays, increasing emissions and wasting fuel. By enabling safer driving practices, accurate GNSS helps maintain smoother traffic flow and contributes to a reduction in the overall environmental footprint.

Dynamic routing and delivery optimisation

GNSS technology enables companies to optimise delivery schedules and routes dynamically based on real-time demand and traffic conditions. During peak hours, for example, delivery services can reroute drivers to less congested areas, ensuring timely arrivals while minimising unnecessary idling and fuel use. This is particularly important in urban settings, where traffic congestion can significantly impact delivery times and emissions.

Support for electric and autonomous vehicles

Accurate navigation is essential for the efficient operation of electric vehicles, and they use location-based services to optimise routes based on charging station locations and energy consumption. Similarly, autonomous vehicles rely on GNSS for accurate positioning and navigation, which can lead to improved traffic management and reduced emissions.

GNSS is one among a suite of sensors that automated driving depends on: along with other sensors like LiDAR and cameras, it enables the vehicle to see its environment and make intelligent decisions about braking and lane position. The accuracy of GNSS technologies is a powerful tool for fostering sustainability in the transportation sector, helping us make informed decisions that benefit both the economy and the planet. As we continue to advance GNSS capabilities, the potential for these technologies to drive sustainable development will only grow, paving the way for a more resilient and environmentally-friendly future.
