FocalPoint wins prestigious Institute of Physics Business Award

Monday 30th October, 2023

Today we’re delighted to announce that Focal Point has picked up the Institute of Physics (IOP) Business Innovation Award for “pioneering and commercialising synthetic aperture processing on low cost consumer devices such as smartphones and smartwatches”.

This award follows Founder, President and CTO Dr Ramsey Faragher being awarded the Dennis Gabor Medal for “numerous innovations in signal processing and sensor fusion, including the invention and commercialisation of the Supercorrelation™ technique that greatly increases the accuracy, sensitivity and security of global navigation satellite system receivers”, just last week.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) is the professional body and learned society for physics, and the leading body for practising physicists. This latest award - The IOP Business Innovation Award specifically recognises and celebrates companies that have excelled in innovation, delivering significant economic and/or societal impact through the application of physics.

A stepchange in GNSS performance

The IOP recognised the impact that the revolutionary technique of Supercorrelation™ can have on improving the overall accuracy, sensitivity and security of location aware devices including smartphones, wearables, and autonomous vehicles.

On hearing of the double success of picking up both awards, Ramsey said:

“It really is a huge honour personally and for the company to have this level of recognition from the Institute of Physics for our use of highly-advanced physics modelling and processing to produce a fundamental stepchange in GNSS performance.”

Recognising the impact to society

The Institute of Physics President, Professor Sir Keith Burnett, said: “The IOP Business Awards recognise and reward the achievements of physics-powered businesses at all stages and of all sizes. Whether well-established or a start-up, an SME or corporation, these innovative companies are making significant contributions to the UK and Ireland’s scientific research and development, driving innovation and supporting the economy."

The awards represent an application to physics that bring about positive change to individuals, societies or economies, by tackling a new problem or improving on a previous solution, and all are thoroughly deserving of an IOP Business Award.

Supercorrelation technology is addressing the challenges that will change our world , with the ability to enhance the efficiency and safety of everyday life.
